Ingredients

Donuts
  • 1 cup flour (white whole wheat flour)
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • pinch of allspice
  • pinch of cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup applesauce
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
Maple Glaze
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Combine all dry ingredients in a bowl.
  2. Mix in the moist ingredients until the batter is combined.
  3. Transfer the batter to a gallon-sized plastic bag, cut off one corner, and pipe it into a greased mini-donut pan, filling each cavity about halfway.
  4. Bake for about 7-8 minutes. Remove the donuts from the oven and lift each one out of the pan.
Frosting
  1. Melt 2 tablespoons butter with 1/4 cup brown sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil and continue boiling for about 2 minutes.
  3. Add maple syrup and 1 tablespoon milk, then bring the mixture back to a boil.
  4. Stir in powdered sugar, using the remaining tablespoon of milk to thin the frosting if needed.
  5. Keep the frosting over low heat while dipping the mini donuts to help maintain a smooth coating consistency.
  6. Dip each mini donut into the frosting and allow the coating to set.

Notes

Fill the mini donut pan cavities about halfway so the donuts have room to expand while keeping their ring shape.
