Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening (butter may be used)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • sugar for rolling

Method

Preparation
  1. Blend the sugars and shortening together until combined. Add the egg, then mix in the dry ingredients.
  2. Shape the dough into round balls using a cookie scoop. Coat each dough ball in white sugar and keep the shapes rounded without flattening.
Baking
  1. Bake the cookies at 350°F (175°C) for 12 minutes.

Notes

These cookies are especially enjoyable before baking and right after they come out of the oven. After a few hours, they naturally become crispier with a texture closer to a traditional sugar cookie.
